Rhetoric is taught with academic pride and flourish at major universities around the world, and it’s closely associated with the prestigious, ancient name of Aristotle, one of the greatest thinkers that Western Civilization has ever produced. Yet — though most people don’t know it, including many teachers of writing — Rhetoric has historically been surrounded by a tradition and reputation for deceit and corruption.
Just about everyone knows that Socrates was negative about Rhetoric, as shown by Plato in his Gorgias dialogue. In it, Socrates concludes, “Rhetoric is mere flattery and disgraceful declamation.” What most don’t know is that even proponents of Rhetoric have had a lot of negative things to say about it.
Negative Statements from PROPONENTS of Rhetoric
For instance, the ancient Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero (106-43 B.C.) taught Rhetoric to the sons of the aristocracy in Rome. And he wrote several books on Rhetoric, including De Inventione (On Invention), De Oratore (a dialogue that discusses the principles of Rhetoric), and Topics (a rhetorical treatment of common topics). However, Cicero thought that the most important factor in eloquence is to — exaggerate and amplify the truth!!! In fact, he thought that speaking the truth was something that a speaker should do only when it suits his purpose! And Cicero’s overarching purpose in life was—”To plant in the world an everlasting memorial of myself.” What an idealist….
Quintilian (35-100 A.D.) also taught Rhetoric to the youth of the nobility of Rome, as his chief occupation. His master work was Institutio Oratoria, a twelve-volume work on Rhetoric that borrowed from many sources, but more from Cicero than from any other. Quintilian felt that verecundia (Latin for a combination of modesty, decency, and restraint) was an absolute vice in an orator because it would make him hesitate, change his mind, or possibly even stop his talking to think things over! Heaven forbid!
Dio Chrsysostom (40-120 A.D.) was a Roman philosopher, orator, and historian who was banished from the Roman Empire at one time. He protested that he was not a Rhetorician because he did not make money, he was not interested in crooked deals, and he did not promote things in the market place — for he was not a Rhetorician!
Another Roman writer who agreed with Dio Chrsysostom was Lucian of Samosata (125-180 A.D.), who was formally trained as a rhetorician. Lucian claimed that a Rhetor is a “pushing, driving, money-chasing operator who leaves any sense of decency, propriety, moderation, and shame at home when he goes to work.” How’s that for putting down yourself, your profession, and your fellow practitioners of Rhetoric?
Probably a turning point for Rhetoric was St. Augustine’s (354-430 A.D.) acceptance of Rhetoric as a major tool in his ministry with the Catholic church. He felt that, since the devil uses the powerful devices of Rhetoric, those on God’s side should also be free to use it in self-defense (I don’t quite understand that logic — Let me get this straight, now: So if the devil uses lies and deceptions, then The Church should do so, too? What about murder — same reasoning? Doesn’t sound like very Christian logic to me… ).
St. Augustine made several statements indicating he was well aware of the deceptive nature of Rhetoric, especially in letters, where he often had to tell his readers that his enthusiasm was real and truthful, and not just rhetorical activities, rather than truthful activities.
A much more modern negative comes from Professor Wayne C. Booth (1921-2005) of the University of Chicago, in his last book published before his death, The Rhetoric of RHETORIC (2004). In it, Professor Booth points out that, beyond a doubt, in the United States and surely throughout much of the world, we are harmed daily by floods of careless or even deliberately harmful “Media Rhetrickery.”
That term, “Media Rhetrickery,” is Booth’s unique term for the widespread misuse of Rhetoric in the media, which incessantly employs Rhetoric for tricky, deceitful, and corrupt purposes. Booth spends a great deal of time in his book talking about various forms of “rhetrickery” (Rhetoric used for tricky and deceitful purposes), often apologizing for the demeaning use of Rhetoric that occurs so frequently in all walks of life. Coming from Booth, this is a heavy indictment of Rhetoric, though he doesn’t mean it to be an indictment, since he has always been a highly respected authority on, and proponent for, the positive values of Rhetoric.
Negative Statements from OPPONENTS of Rhetoric
Of course, opponents have been plenty frank about their own assessments of Rhetoric, and we’ll examine a few of their sentiments, as well.
For example, Francis Bacon (1561-1626) — English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist, author — thought that Rhetoricians of his time were far too much interested in the nice arrangements of their sentences, and the decoration of their works with tropes and figures, than in the weight of matter, worth of subject, soundness of argument, originality, or depth of judgment of their writing and speeches (The Advancement of Learning, 1605).
John Locke (1632-1704) — the great English thinker and philosopher — concluded that the purpose of Rhetoric was to imply wrong ideas, inflame the passions, and thereby mislead the audience’s judgment; and he claimed that the techniques of Rhetoric are “perfect cheats… wholly to be avoided… rhetoric, that powerful instrument of error and deceit” (An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, 1690). What a powerfully negative statement!
Most probably the most brilliant — yet commonsensical and scholarly — modern text on Rhetoric is the 1984 book by C.H. Knoblauch and Lil Brannon, Rhetorical Traditions and the Teaching of Writing. In this largely ignored book of keen insights into Rhetoric, the authors actually attack the revival of classical Rhetoric as being a barrier to the creation of a new rhetoric, which a lot of experts have been clamoring for.
Why? Because, as they show, the ancient creators of Rhetoric believed that it merely provides a means of presenting or displaying truths which have been independently validated in a traditional but unnecessary verbal dress, that Rhetoric was largely a ceremonial exercise. In other words, Rhetoric has always provided mainly the forms of speaking and writing without substance or content — and what greater condemnation can you have than that?
Stephen Spender (1909-1995) — English poet, novelist, essayist — provided an interesting negative insight into both Rhetoric and rhetoricians when he opined, “Rhetoric is the art of deception, isn’t it? And when you become good at using rhetoric on other people, you eventually and all unknowingly use it on yourself.”
Rhetoric Corrupted the Roman Empire
The first interaction of Romans with professional Sophistic Rhetoricians was to expel them from the city. How could that happen? Well, even Roman peasants knew that Rhetors were notorious for lacking in values and virtues, being interested almost exclusively in money and fame (like Cicero). And Sophist Rhetors were widely known to criticize and tear down everything of moral repute. That’s what they had done to the Greek culture.
But the Sophistic Rhetors were great entertainers. They persevered and finally broke down the Roman public’s prudent resistance towards them through excessive flattery and through an intensive campaign of debunking established values, confounding commonsense conclusions, and turning on a vast amount of charm, wit, and synthetic sincerity. As Rhetors overcame the public’s resistance and became almost their only source of entertainment, the insatiable hunger of the people for such entertainment everywhere throughout the Roman Empire was matched only by an unbridled passion for the spoken word. There was nothing they would not pay for suaviloquentia, “pleasing speech,” the top-selling product of the Second Sophistic period that caught on and stuck.
As St. Augustine pointed out, the dominating desire of people through the Roman Empire was to relax and enjoy themselves at the theaters and games (sound like anything you’re familiar with?). Lucian was more specific: He explained that the Rhetors simply got them drunk and went to work on them; the huge audiences that filled amphitheatres were paralyzed before they knew what hit them. They were putty in the hands of well-trained Rhetoricians, helpless automatons without a mind or will of their own.
Because of the popularity and influence of professional Rhetors, Rhetoric became the chief study in schools for the elite throughout the Roman Empire. Parents didn’t want their children to study the hard way. They insisted that eloquentia or Rhetoric was the most important thing in the world for their children to learn, and that’s what they were taught, almost exclusively.
And so schools were not interested in turning out experts. They gave their students just enough background to enable them to follow the main ideas of scholarly authors. And along with merely the main idea of every subject, every treatise, every speech studied, they were taught the Rhetorical techniques that allowed them to supply simplistic, entertaining prose that allowed them to appear knowledgeable when they weren’t, eventually reducing all scholastic output to impotence. Thus, the educated elite perpetuated a long line of Rhetors that achieved wonderful reputations and acquired great wealth in public activities from cities, dynasts, kings, and private individuals. They spoke a great deal, but were sadly lacking in intelligence, according to Dio Chrysostom, an eye-witness of the times.
From 100 A. D. onward in the Roman Empire, in every branch of science and art, there was an universal inability to create new compositions, as well as a complete incapacity to invent anything new, which is typical of an age devoid of all creative power. It’s not a new story. As Rhetoric came to be the dominant force in other flourishing cultures, such as Greece, Egypt, Babylonia, and the Arabic empire, the same mental and moral degradation occurred as Rhetoric began to dominate each of them.
Other forces had their telling influences, to be sure. But it was the universal worship and practice of Rhetoric that corrupted the Roman Empire and brought it to its knees.
You wondered where Rhetoric got its bad reputation?
Now you know.

T-shirt printing is a great way to expand your marketing and advertising affordably. When a small business uses this type of marketing, they open a wide avenue for reaching an audience that may not be aware of your company or services. There are a few tips when deciding on the type of shirt and printing that you select to get the most visibility for your business.

COLOR AND QUALITY

It is important to select a shirt color that will combine with many other colors. While a bright, neon shirt is unusual, it also cannot be worn on a regular basis. In addition, the color of the shirt should make the printing on the shirt pop. The quality of shirts will vary and are directly proportional to the price of the basic shirt. When a low quality knit is chosen, the shirt will usually shrink in the wash and will begin to wear out very quickly. In order to maintain your visibility in the market, choosing a shirt that is made from a quality knit will assure that your brand will be worn and shown for a longer period of time.

LETTERING

If you are going to use lettering on your shirt, choosing a color that will not peel off the knit will help you to maintain your brand in the marketplace. Many people choose to use a combination of methods on their shirts that include embroidery for lettering. Using this method for your lettering will maintain the integrity of the shirt and the letters will not wear off. Since the goal of the shirt is to promote the company and brand, it is always a good idea to look for methods of lettering that will last as long as the shirt you are putting it on.

LOGO OR BRAND

In order to assure that the brand and logo will be clearly visible when the shirt is worn, it must “pop” on the shirt. Therefore, it should be directly opposite on the color wheel to make it stand out. The most successful brands and logos are very simple and clear geometric lines and shapes. If you have a very detailed logo or brand, simplify it for printing. Keep lines to a minimum and use splashes of color that will stand out from a distance.

CONCLUSION

Essay Writers – Brighten Your Thesis with Reverse Values
By William R. Drew, Jr.
The first time I taught VALUES in a writing class, I told my students to go home and write down as many strong experiences as they could think of in their lives. Next to each, they were to write out a strong reversal that was closely related to each strongly positive or strongly negative experience and based on further experiences from their lives or from the lives of people they personally knew.
I provided several examples on the white board so they would be sure to understand, and we discussed those a bit. And I explained that the assignment was to help them identify material they could write about in the several types of essays they would be completing throughout the course of the class. They seemed to ‘get it.’
However, before the next class period, two unhappy students came to see me. They were having trouble finding values in their lives that they could reverse.
The first student, Jared, stood in front of my desk and said, ‘I don’t see what you mean by positive and negative values in my life. I guess I’ve got a stable but boring life,’ he laughed.
I laughed, too, and responded, ‘Well, how are your experiences, your relationships, at home? What are the values-really positive, really negative? Just so-so, nothing to brag about or complain about?’
‘Just so-so, I guess. We get along okay, actually. No real problems. Nothing really wonderful, either, I guess.’
I chuckled and said, ‘Okay, I know what you mean. What about your health? How’s that? Great shape, bad shape-what?’
Jared offered, ‘Well, my health’s okay, too, I guess.’ He paused. ‘There is one thing, though.’ He looked down at his feet. ‘I’ve got diabetes, but it’s under control. I eat right and take my insulin at the right times. No big deal.’
I smiled and replied, ‘I think you might have something to write about there, Jared. So how do you think most people look at or view or value diabetes, what are their overall expectations about diabetes-do they view it positively or negatively?’
He looked off into the distance, out the window, and said, ‘Actually, my friends kid me about all the great food I can’t eat any more, like hot fudge sundaes. But, you know what?’ Jared seemed a bit defensive, and he got a bit animated and energetic at this point. ‘Because I watch what I eat, I eat better than they do, and I take better care of myself because of my diabetes. In twenty years, I betcha I’ll be in much better shape than they’ll be in!’
‘Bingo! You’ve got it, Jared! While most people see diabetes as a very negative value and have negative expectations about it, you value it as an experience that makes you discipline yourself so that you take better care of your body, and you’ll be better off in the long run for it!’
‘Actually, now that I think about it, it’s paying off in the short-run, too, Mr. Drew. I’m already in better shape than my friends. They eat all kinds of junk food, and they stuff themselves when they shouldn’t.’
‘Okay, then! You’ve got your thesis for your first essay in our class, a cause-and-effect paper-now go write down more strong values with strong reverses!’ Grinning, Jared left.
The second student, Pamela, started off in the same negative way: ‘I guess I’ve just got a do-nothing life, Mr. Drew. I don’t know what to do with this assignment,’ she said in a monotone, looking at her feet.
‘Well, Pamela, as we showed on the board in class, just write down some positive things you feel strongly about and some negative things you feel strongly about. And then write down reverses next to them.’ I motioned to the chair beside my desk, and she sat down.
‘What positive things? Since my parents got divorced eight months ago, nothing’s been positive,’ she mumbled, dull-eyed, staring downward.
‘That truly is not a positive thing, Pamela,’ I gently sympathized, ‘and I’m sure sorry it happened to you and your family [uncomfortable pause] … but it may be something you could write about since you feel so strongly about it. For instance, what do you think most kids your age feel and think about divorce-what do they expect from it, positive things or negative things?’
‘Like me, they think it’s a bummer-and it really does suck,’ she said, and she seemed to reflect for a moment. ‘But I guess there IS a sort of silver lining to the whole thing. I get to see my dad more, y’know. He schedules time every week with me so he can come over and take me out and do things with me.’
‘I see. You’re referring to the saying that, Every dark cloud has a silver lining. Any other silver linings-good things that happened after the unhappy divorce that didn’t happen with your dad before the divorce, when he was living at home?’
‘Well, yeah. He takes me more places, and he buys me more stuff. Now that I think about it, he even gives me more money than he ever did before!’ Pamela was grinning faintly, now.
‘You’re on the right track, Pam. Now you’ve identified the positives about divorce-the reverse of the negative value expectations, that everybody sees divorce as just totally bad. As you said, there’s really a silver lining in it for you because you get to see your dad more, he takes you more places, he buys more things for you, and he even gives you more money than he ever gave you before the divorce.
‘Sounds like you’ve probably got lots of details to support your thesis that, Divorce isn’t so bad, after all-at least not in your experience. Now use that same method of looking for silver linings with some other negative values in your life, and you’ll have plenty of material for all the essays you have to write after your cause-and-effect paper on divorce.’
‘Thanks, Mr. Drew. I understand the assignment a lot better, now. See you in class!’ Pamela stood up from her chair and walked away, smiling.
After those two interviews, I wondered why they were able to ‘get it’ in class and ‘get it’ when talking with me, but not by themselves. Days later (I can be pretty slow sometimes), it finally struck me: In each case, something was handy-me!-to prompt them and keep them focused on the process and on the purpose.
The students just didn’t know how to look for the right patterns. They hadn’t really gotten the overall perspective, and they needed prompting to help them gather the strong values.
So that night I worked on my computer for several hours and came up with a table that had clear prompts to help students gather the strong value experiences in their lives, which would make a handy guide for all their writing for the entire semester. It looked a bit like this, with these column headings across the top —–
………………………School………….Friends………….Family………….Church………….Other
And on the left of the table, as headings for three rows, from left to right, making a total of fifteen squares to fill in with strong values and their reverses ——-
CONSTANT Values people & events & conditions
REPEAT Values successes & failures & duds
SINGLE EVENT Values surprises & accidents & adventures
You get the idea, right? And it worked for those students!
Since then, I’ve made several improvements to the table, but the basic idea, the basic principles are the same. You can probably see some changes to make to the table, yourself.
Next time you have to write an essay, try the table!
You’ll like it!
It’ll brighten your thesis — no matter what the essay assignment!!!

Bacterial vaginosis, also known as vaginal bacteriosis and BV for short, is infamous for its recurring nature. This is one of the female health issues that seem to come back every time the patient thinks she is cured. And there are a number of cases in which the BV becomes recurring almost to a point of becoming chronic.

Is bacterial vaginosis fundamentally a bad curse? Is it incurable? Is it something that is going to haunt you for the rest of your life?

No – practically every case of BV is something that can be cured. Antibiotics are known to work, but they have their own limitations. Antibiotics simply kill the bad bacteria causing the issue, but does not fix the root cause. So if the root cause is not fixed then the BV would simply come back once the effects of the antibiotics are gone.

The root cause behind bacterial vaginosis is the changed level of acidity inside the vagina. The human vagina houses a number of breeds of good and bad bacteria. As long as the balance between these breeds is maintained, there is nothing to worry about. But the moment the pH value – the factor that determines the degree of acidity of the human vagina – deviates from the normal levels, the balance of bacteria distribution gets affected. And BV occurs if the pH stays at a level at which the BV bacteria can grow and sustain.

As you may have guessed by now, the key to permanent elimination is to maintain the right acidity inside the vagina. Once you hit the correct range of vaginal acidity, you would be safe. Your existing BV would go away since the environment is unfriendly for the bacteria. So no matter whether your BV is a new one or a recurring one, this is the only way you could get fundamentally cured rather than a spray-and-pray approach that is inevitable with conventional remedies. And the cure to BV would be permanent since the bacteria can not grow back.

The key question now is, how to maintain the right pH levels inside the vagina? Taking the natural route is the best option. There are ways to naturally cure bacterial vaginosis and that would permanently eliminate the problem. And that may be the best way forward for a person in the longer run to get rid of BV forever.

The only way to succeed with internet marketing is to always know what your competition is doing. You must track what people are buying within your niche. You need to track what people are saying about your business. You should also focus on the hot topics that have to do with your subject matter. Most importantly, you need to track what your competitors are doing. You’re always trying to convince people that you’re the best source for their hard earned money. You can never do this unless you study what your competitions is up to.

If you are looking for a way to gain useful information about your competition, you can use Slideshare. Which of your competitors has content published online? You can use Slideshare to learn this. It can also tell you if a certain business owner or executive is giving a public lecture somewhere. This site is an useful resource, for it has a common server where you can see all of the presentations that have been saved to it. This gives you a simple way to keep track of what all these businesses are doing. Another site you should check out is The Free Library. If you don’t have time to visit your local library, this gives you a very good online substitute. Your local public library most likely doesn’t have the kind of vast collection of publications and books as you’ll find on The Free Library. It has a search feature that allows you to look up anything you want, whether it be a topic, competitor’s name or type of product. You can use this resource for free. It’s always best to look for free alternatives when you are starting a business. You have the opportunity to look up whatever published content you may need.

Google Finance is one of the best ways to track the financial practices of your competitors. You would use this mainly for looking into a company of some size. It allows you to review income statements that have been filed by companies and business owners. This site also shows you any online activity about the business, such as blogs or news stories. You may not get much use out of this site if your competitors are independent contractors or individual entrepreneurs. On the other hand, larger internet marketing companies who are competing on a larger scale will find this quite useful.

It’s natural to feel uncomfortable about doing this kind of research on your competitors. If you were to watch your neighbor like this, you might be reported! When you’re in any kind of business, though, this kind of thing is something you must do to stay ahead of the game. If you don’t know what the competition is doing, you won’t be able to figure out a way to improve upon it. In order to market effectively, you must be in a position to demonstrate that your product is superior to your competitors’, and you can’t do this unless you know all about them.

Joe has been a full time internet marketer for about a year now, he primarily promotes subjects which he is interested in. As an IT consultant he is interested in using technology to protect ourselves online when travelling like this Saudi proxy, and is a big fan of this surfing protection software.

Searching for support about an uncommon vaginal discharge can feel embarrassing. Having to discuss just like personal dilemma with a health care provider may be incredibly tough, but it’s also hugely critical. Many in the causes of abnormal discharges from the vagina are really serious, and some can even be fatal.

You will find numerous signs that a release from the vagina is problematic. A clear or white release is commonly produced at particular stages in the menstrual cycle, and is nothing to worry about. Irregular release may possibly be thicker or heavier than is commonly skilled. It could be related to pus, or appear clumpy, thick and white. It might have an unusual colour, for example, green, grey, or yellow, or it may be slightly blood colored. A strong, foul odor is another sign that a release is problematic. Any extra warning signs that may possibly be related to a vaginal discharge, which include bloodiness, itchiness, a burning sensation, discomfort or a rash are also indications of a health-related difficulty.

A lot of people today select to search online for answers to their questions about any strange health issues that they are experiencing, especially when it comes to warning signs which include vaginal release. This may be an useful initial step, particularly when it helps to build sufficient urgency and confidence to talk to a healthcare professional concerning the dilemma. Trying to find answers on the net is not sufficient, however. The causes of a vaginal discharge can only be accurately determined by a health care provider after conducting an examination and laboratory tests. It truly is too easy to confuse the signs of various infections and other causes of vaginal release to be able to determine what the problem is merely from comparing the discharge to descriptions from the Internet.

Making an appointment with a physician to talk about a vaginal discharge can be less intimidating when it is clear what can be expected during that appointment.

Doctors investigating an irregular vaginal release will generally ask for a full sexual history too as a clinical one. This can enable to determine whether the cause could possibly be a sexually transmitted infection. The medical professional will also ask about how the discharge has changed over time and what other signs and symptoms, if any, have been skilled. They may ask about when the release began and how long it has lasted. They may also would like to know concerning the color and consistency on the release, and whether there has been any odor related to it. Other signs that they may wish to know about include any itchiness, pain in either the vagina or the abdomen, and any irregular bleeding. They will also want to be informed about any underlying medical conditions or medications that are currently being taken, and no matter whether there is any history of comparable problems, and if so, how they were treated.

As a woman is vital you contact a doctor as soon as you identify if you have bacterial vaginosis or any type of vaginal discharge .

A well-train pet typically leads a happier and healthier life and its owner also can delight in a trouble-free life long companion. Canine coaching – fundamental obedience, home and potty education are therefore important and essential to a dog’s education.

The conventional method of canine teaching guidelines and guide would be to checklist a series of things that you need to “Do” and you may even know the A-Z of k9 instruction! But sometimes what must be done can be said best by telling what ought to not be accomplished. Hope you agree with me!

This article seeks to record 18 “Don’t” once you practice your puppy. The reasons for the don’ts will turn out to be evident as the lessons continue and each one is based upon the distinctive psychology from the dog’s mind.

1. Don’t punish your k9 while you happen to be angry or lack control of your self.

2. Really don’t punish your k9 using the lead or any instrument of instruction or anything he really should associate with duty or pleasure.

3. Do not sneak up on your puppy or grab him from the rear.

4. Don’t chase your dog to catch him; he must come to you or run right after you.

5. Really don’t coax your k9 to you and then turn upon him with the whip. You’ll regret the deception.

6. Will not trick or fool or taunt your puppy. It’s cruel and inconsistent to tease your puppy to come to you when he can not.

7. Do not punish a k9 by stepping on his paws needlessly. They are exceedingly sensitive. Really don’t twist his ears playfully or otherwise. Never ever strike him on the backbone, in the face or on the ears.

8. Do not grab your canine or reach for him swiftly. He should never fear his master, ought to not be made nervous by his master, and really should feel that punishment given is deserved.

9. Really don’t nag your pet; never be giving orders to him constantly; never pester him with your shoutings.

10. Do not praise a k9 for executing a certain act, then at a later time, scold him for doing the same act. Should you permit him to bite your toes today and believe it enjoyable, do not strike him for doing it tomorrow, when you aren’t in great humor. Consistency is a chief virtue in pet training.

11. Don’t prepare your pet instantly or soon immediately after he has eaten.

12. Do not lose patience with a puppy younger than six months. In no way throw or kick a puppy nor lift him by the head or leg or skin in the neck.

13. Will not prepare him in feats requiring a lot strength or endurance until he is at least six months old.

14. Never work your pet with out some short rest or play periods throughout instruction. A five-minute rest for every fifteen minutes of education is desirable.

15. Never permit everyone to give commands to your canine. Even though you happen to be education him, he have to be an one-man puppy, depending on you alone to feed him and care for him.

16. Really don’t consider tricks the chief end or the chief part of instruction. Usefulness is the object sought in all instruction from the canine. Acts that spring naturally from the dog’s instincts are to be fostered.

17. Do not expect your pet to be a wonderful canine immediately after a few weeks of coaching; four months to a year may perhaps be essential in order to make the master proud of him, but the work is worth the effort. Education never ends.

18. Do not jump to the conclusion that your puppy is dumb. He might differ with you believing that the trainer should know much more than the canine.

To finish, try to remember these 18 Don’ts rules, appreciate training your k9 and most importantly have lots of enjoyable along the way!
